I've said it before...

If your friends and family don't like the person you are dating, chances are pretty good you should listen to them. It's better to be alone and unfettered by someone else's issues than to be in a relationship that is probably toxic.

Also, I find it odd when a guy doesn't like sports. That's one of those non-negotiable things I look for in a date. From my limited experience, the men who weren't into any sports at all had serious problems (infidelity, alcoholism, mental abuse, etc.). I'm not saying that they have to like a specific sport, but they have to be into something sporty. Even the guys who never really participated in sports in grade school, like to watch golf, tennis, bicycle races or something, right?

My recently-divorced daughter has been dating some guy she works with for the past six months or so.

She apparently likes him but she's never brought him home to meet us. That's fine, I guess, but I'm starting to make some judgements about the guy already.

Probably not a good thing. :)

BTW, my best friend is a huge baseball fan now (has season tickets with his dad) and we never once had a discussion about sports until we were in our late 30's.

While I was playing every sport, he never once mentioned anything about actually liking baseball. He never lamented not playing (to me) until he were in our late 30's.

I think it's different with a potential partner because part of the process is finding what you have in common.

I totally agree with you on this one. Moms usually have a good sense on those things (at least my mom did) and guys should be guys.
