Ignorance is bliss
Mostly, I've been ignoring all the recent economic news because it's bad and because I really don't understand how it got that way. Then I was talking to a friend when she mentioned how 401k's have been taking a hit with all the volatility in the stock market. Morbidly curious, I logged in to my account.
I nearly had a coronary episode right there at work. In 3 months I've lost over $900. Fucking A! I could have gone to Vegas with that money! This being responsible shit is for the birds.

Don't look there! I did the same thing and it just infuriates me and makes me want to stash all our money in a mattress. We've lost a ton lately too . . . it sucks, but hopefully 25 years from now it'll all be good!
i'm in total agreement with mara. never ever ever look. it will almost always make you sick. and certainly i don't have to tell YOU this, but Vegas is NOT the answer. just hang loose and look again in... well, even 2 years. okay, maybe 5. but 5 from now, you'll be happy you didn't do anything rash.
I know...401k investment is for the long haul. I was just shocked that it could change so drastically like that. It would be nice if I could MAKE $900 in three months instead.
